Lost in the sparkle: reflecting on the legacy of Victoria's Secret—has the show lost its magic?
Did the 2024 show recapture the magic of the past, or did it fall flat against modern expectations?
As I settled in to watch the 2024 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, I was flooded with memories of past seasons: the anticipation leading up to the event, the stunning models in extravagant wings, and the palpable excitement in the air. I remember sitting with friends, voting on the dazzling outfits and dreaming of the day I'd walk that runway myself. But as the show unfolded this year, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment—has the magic truly faded?
With each passing year, the fashion industry evolves, but what happens when a beloved tradition like the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show struggles to keep up? Did the essence of what made it special slip away during its six-year hiatus? After a much-anticipated comeback, I found myself questioning whether this iconic brand has lost its sparkle or if this is merely the beginning of a new chapter.
The new faces of Victoria’s Secret
This year's casting showcased a broader range of body types and a more diverse lineup, marking a refreshing change for a brand long criticized for its narrow beauty standards. Models like Ashley Graham and Paloma Elsesser were standout choices, alongside transgender models Valentina Sampaio and Alex Consani, which represents a significant shift in representation.
While these new faces brought an invigorating energy, the event still felt somewhat underwhelming for long-time fans like myself. The diversity was a positive step forward, yet the runway lacked the drama and excitement that once defined it. In previous years, the show featured iconic moments, such as models strutting in enormous, dazzling wings or walking through highly themed sections. This year’s event felt devoid of those spectacular, wow-worthy highlights.
The musical performances
This year's Fashion Show featured an all-female lineup of powerhouse performers, adding to the electrifying atmosphere. Cher captivated the audience with her timeless hits and iconic presence (as a lifelong fan, I was particularly thrilled). LISA of BLACKPINK brought a contemporary flair, dazzling viewers with her charisma and dynamic dance moves while donning the brand's signature wings. Tyla also performed her hit Water, further enriching the show's soundscape. Together, these artists not only celebrated the return of the show but also marked a significant moment in its evolution, blending the realms of music and fashion in a unique way.
A nod to the past?
I was overjoyed to see some of my all-time favourite Angels, like Candice Swanepoel and Adriana Lima, return to the runway. Candice always shines, Alessandra Ambrosio and Jasmine Tookes added to the nostalgia, even if Jasmine’s moments were cut short. The inclusion of legends like Kate Moss and Carla Bruni further celebrated the brand’s rich history, beautifully connecting the past and present. Their iconic status has shaped the fashion industry, embodying the elegance that Victoria's Secret once epitomised.
However, a significant moment was Gigi Hadid opening the show. While she is undoubtedly a beloved figure, having an iconic Angel in that role would have better honoured the brand's legacy and resonated with long-time fans like me.
Where was the Fantasy Bra?
One of my biggest disappointments this year was the absence of the Fantasy Bra. This long-standing Victoria's Secret tradition is essential to the brand's identity. Can you even call it a VS show without this iconic piece? For me, the Fantasy Bra was one of the key elements that made each performance memorable, adding an essential touch of magic to the runway, especially when showcasing the creative talents behind it.
The overall vibe
The entire vibe of the show felt markedly different this year. The production quality was noticeably lower compared to the high-octane extravaganza I grew up watching. The runway lacked flair, and the camera work felt amateurish at times. Without the big wings or themed sets, the event missed the sparkle and high production values that made Victoria's Secret a highly anticipated annual occasion.
The absence of themed sections (one of my favourite aspects of the old shows) was another letdown. The outfits resembled everyday lingerie more than the glamorous, dramatic pieces that made the models shine. Even the energy from the models felt off, as if they were holding back or weren’t as engaged with the experience.
What Victoria's Secret meant to me
In the past, the Victoria's Secret show inspired me to strive for my healthiest self and take care of my body. Watching the behind-the-scenes preparations and the Angels’ hard work leading up to the show was always a highlight. It wasn't just a fashion show, it was an event, an experience that ignited my passion for the fashion industry and ultimately influenced me to pursue a career in PR.
But this time, the spark was missing. I understand that times are changing, however, I can’t shake the feeling that the brand has lost its unique charm. I miss the over-the-top glamour, the unforgettable moments and the iconic Fantasy Bra that symbolised the pinnacle of the show.
A vision for the future
For Victoria's Secret to thrive in today’s fashion landscape, it must combine modern inclusivity with the high-energy spectacle that once captivated audiences. Celebrating diversity is essential, but the brand should also deliver an exciting and memorable show.
My vision includes reinstating iconic elements like the grand wings, themed sections and the Fantasy Bra. An iconic Angel should take center stage to honour the brand’s legacy rather than a more recent face like Gigi Hadid (no offence intended). Above all, a return to high production values is crucial, it’s time to embrace the motto: go big or go home!
As I reflect on the 2024 show, I’m reminded of its profound impact on my journey in the fashion industry. The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show inspired me to pursue my healthiest self and ignited my passion for PR. Let’s reignite that spark and remind the world why this event can still be a mesmerising celebration of beauty, empowerment and creativity. I remain hopeful that VS will reclaim its magic and continue inspiring us all.
